We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven, which brings us back to the hero’s shoulders and a gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it.

“There’s a lot of people depending on you. You’re a bit of a legend.”“What does the legend say?”“That you sailed the Atlantic. Walked across America. That you were the only person to get out of Japan alive. ‘Martha Jones’, they say. ‘She’s gonna save the world.’”

Do you want to know something about Martha Jones? Martha is clever. Martha is brave. Martha was hope when humanity had all but lost it. Do you know what she did? It seems like a lot of you have forgotten. Maybe it slipped your mind. She traveled the world for a year by herself, telling her story, and she saved everyone. She laughed in The Master’s face. She saved the human race, she saved billions of others in the universe from war, and she saved The Doctor. She met someone extraordinary and fell in love with the life he led, as so many others did before her and so many others will after. She fell in love with him, and no, she wasn’t the first. She won’t be the last. And no, she didn’t leave when he didn’t love her back the same way (because he did love her, he loves them all). She stayed, because she knew being with someone she cared about and experiencing things beyond her wildest dreams, things she would never get to do or see otherwise, was worth that ache in her heart. And after she had done all of those wonderful dangerous unbelievable things, after she had done the most important job of all, she got out. When it got to be too much, when her family needed her, when she realized it was dangerous and unhealthy for her to stay in more ways than one and it was time to stop, she did. And she came out cleverer and braver and wiser for it. She wasn’t second best. She’s Martha fucking Jones. And furthermore, she’s met Shakespeare. So stick that in your juice box and suck it.
